Lights out!
Who could of thought that a country like Nicaragua, green with lots of rain, could be under the terror of a rationalized system of water? Belive it or not, a tropical country like this has current tap water from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. That means no shower in the morning, he he...
The same scheduale has the electric energy. The 2 important things missing in nigaraguans life are very well connected. As you cannot pomp water into people´s houses without electric energy. And you cannot have electric energy when the cables are damaged. Old damaged cables not replaced in time according to the contract Union Fenosa had with the Nicaraguan government. But that is another story...So we spent our next 2 days in Granada and experienced this situation. We did not miss it that much as we spent our time in the streets of this most beautiful nicaraguan city. Great atmosphere in the evening especially. Not sure what exactly was the responsible for all that charm. Maybe the old reconditioned buildings, the chaos and the colours on every street or just the impression you are in a city of the last century.
Another sight in a nearby village was the lowest point in Central America, a beautiful volcano lake called Laguna de Apoyo. It was sorrounded by lots of trees with the additional scary congo monkeys.
A bad surprise for me was in the last evening visiting the city´s ´polvorin´. A place where the Spanish used to store the explosive powder. Crazy William Walker later used it to burn down the city. Well, a gipsy circus with a small goat and a clown as their main stars, was installing his tent in a nearby park. Tied to a big stone was a spider monkey, sorrounded by loads of children making fun of it. It´s even more sad for me as I know this is a very sensitive and vulnerable species of monkey.
