Mexico and the supervillage where we almost get kicked!
We entered Mexico a few days ago and our first impression was good: clean, with beautiful
vegetation and better bus places. I mean no more 5 people sitting on 3 places and definitely no more passengers looking like they have a terminal desease. Neat!
We headed towards San Cristobal de las Casas. Colonial city comparable to Antigua in Guatemala. Antigua wins the race as it looks much more local and not that touristic, but nevertheless San Cristobal is a very nice place. It has loads of colourful old houses and churches. Also they have mariachi with a fixed scheduale that you can also hire to sing for your own party/girlfirend, and the best part: bakerys with 100 different types of bread and deserts.
We arrived at night so that all seemed magical. I actually started feeling sorry that our trip was to end that soon and that we are not to visit that much of Mexico. I cooled down the next day when we had some bad experiences in the small village of San Juan Chamula's Sunday market. First we were asked to pay to enter the village's church. We tried to explain the locals that invited us to buy the tickets that it's wrong and it's a shameful thing to ask for money to enter God's house. They did not seem to understand anything and we left pretty upset. We sat down for a drink and tried to take a photo of the locals. Almost immediately we were sorrounded by a few men asking us to delete immediately the photo. No explanation whatsoever. Rude, rude, rude!!
I must say thogh that the church on the outside was very pretty and colourful. The inside was probably housing a mayan ritual or something like that. We will never know.
We got too upset to continue visiting the market so we left. Anyway, the market was for locals only. They had a few animals for sale, second hand clothes and other goods for the house. Really crowded and dirty, with children all over the place. We could barely walk around, it was that populated!!
So we went back to nice San Cristobal and enjoyed the rest of the day visiting and eating. Next day we headed to Palenque (the ruins).
